More than a decade after its initial release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to expand once again. CD Projekt Red has announced that its third expansion, Songs of the Past, is scheduled for a 2027 launch, promising a new region, fresh monsters, and additional narrative depth.
Expanding the Continent
According to an interview with IGN at the Lucca Comics & Games festival, the development team is focusing on crafting a distinct region named Lettin. Miles Tost, CD Projekt Red’s level design lead, explained that the team is placing a heavy emphasis on cultural identity to make the new area feel unique. Lettin will feature a blend of British aristocratic influences and rural Polish countryside architecture, further defined by its local economy.
A key example of this world-building is “Bracket,” a local alcohol made from honey and hops produced within the region. This detail informs the local ecosystem, specifically the introduction of a new monster called the Swarmion. These creatures are attracted to the region’s honey production, highlighting how small, localized cultural details are being used to influence gameplay and monster behavior.
Lore and Narrative Integrity
Managing the deep lore of The Witcher universe remains a priority for the team. Writer Paula Meissner noted that the developers work closely with an internal lore team to ensure that new content remains faithful to existing books and games. When discussing the challenges of maintaining canon, Tost referenced the return of characters previously thought dead, emphasizing that the team aims to provide logical narrative justifications for such developments rather than resorting to retcons.
Why it matters
For players, Songs of the Past represents a significant return to one of the most celebrated RPGs of the last decade. By focusing on a new, distinct region with its own ecological and economic systems, the expansion aims to offer a fresh experience that respects the series’ established lore.
Players should look forward to how the new region’s mechanics and cultural influences affect their approach to exploration and combat. While the expansion is still several years away, the emphasis on grounded world-building suggests that CD Projekt Red is aiming to capture the same attention to detail that defined the base game and previous expansions.
