Epic Unveils Unreal Engine 6, Merging UE5 With Fortnite’s Creator Tools
Epic revealed Unreal Engine 6 at State of Unreal 2026, merging UE5 with Fortnite's UEFN tools, with early access targeted for the end of 2027.

Epic Games used its State of Unreal 2026 keynote on June 17 to reveal Unreal Engine 6, a full merger of the traditional Unreal Engine 5 toolset with the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). Early access is targeted for the end of 2027, which gives studios more than a year to plan before they can start testing the new engine in production.
What UE6 actually does
The pitch is simple on paper: build once, deploy anywhere, whether that is traditional platforms, Fortnite itself, or a studio’s own live-service ecosystem. Epic describes UE6 as combining the AAA game development capabilities of UE5 with the next-generation pipeline it has been building inside Fortnite.
Under the hood, UE6 shifts core gameplay programming toward Verse, Epic’s own language, which Epic says “transactionalizes C++” to make it easier to build persistent, large-scale experiences with many contributors. The move also begins phasing out Blueprints, the visual scripting system an entire generation of developers learned Unreal on. That transition is the part developers will watch most closely, because Blueprints are central to how many small teams prototype and ship games.
UE 5.8 and Lore
Alongside the UE6 announcement, Epic shipped Unreal Engine 5.8, the final major UE5 release. It focuses on performance and maturing existing features, including Lumen running at 60 frames per second on Nintendo Switch 2, production-ready MegaLights and Audio Insights, and an experimental Mesh Terrain tool for building landscapes.
Epic also released Lore, a free, open-source version control system built in Rust and designed for both code and large binary assets. It is aimed at replacing Git and Perforce for large game projects, where huge art files often slow down traditional tools.
The numbers behind the push
Epic backed the announcement with real traction: over $1 billion paid out to UEFN creators since launch, and average iteration times in UEFN reduced by about 40%. The Epic Games Store now hosts more than 6,000 games from over 3,000 partners, and third-party PC game spending on the Store grew 57% in 2025 to $400 million.
Epic is also rebuilding the Epic Games Store’s backend and connecting it more tightly to Fortnite, with some Store purchases now granting Fortnite cosmetics tied to that game’s IP.
Why it matters
Unreal Engine underpins a huge share of the games industry, including many titles Ralify covers. A merger this fundamental between AAA tooling and Fortnite’s creator ecosystem could reshape how mid-size and indie studios build and distribute games over the next few years, well beyond anything Epic ships itself.
For developers, the practical advice is to keep shipping on UE5 for now, start learning Verse, and follow Epic’s published road to UE6 before committing new projects. For the growing studio scene in the Gulf, where many teams build on Unreal and UEFN, the merged toolset could lower the cost of reaching Fortnite’s audience and traditional platforms from a single project.
