Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter just received Blood & Brine, a free post-game expansion that launches today on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The new content takes protagonist Arlo away from the frozen North to Hardshell Brook, a coastal region loaded with 11 quests, 10 new bosses, nine armour sets, fresh music, and an entirely new fishing system.
What’s Waiting in Hardshell Brook
The expansion sends Arlo to help two shipwrecked sailors, Jaimie and Sam, who want to build an aquarium to earn money for ship repairs. The core draw is fishing—you’ll hunt down 32 aquatic creatures across different spots to fill their collection. It’s framed as a quieter rhythm between combat encounters, though the expansion makes clear that “some things under the surface are much happier trying to eat Arlo than being displayed behind glass.”
Beyond fishing, Hardshell Brook introduces ship arena battles that take combat out onto the water, adding new environmental hazards alongside traditional land-based fights. The nine new armour sets give players both practical combat prep and cosmetic variety. You’ll need to finish the main campaign before accessing the expansion.
One standout feature is a set of crossover armours inspired by other indie games: Blasphemous, Cult of the Lamb, Dave the Diver, Death’s Door, Moonlighter, and Beyond Galaxyland. Rather than dropping these costumes in unchanged, Odd Bug Studio’s artists redrew and adapted each set to fit Arlo and the Ratdom’s hand-drawn medieval aesthetic.
Why This Matters for Metroidvania Fans
Tails of Iron 2 built its reputation on satisfying combat design and a hand-crafted world. Adding substantial post-game content—especially one that introduces a new mechanic like fishing—signals confidence in player investment and extends the game’s lifespan without a paid sequel or battle pass model. For a studio-published indie title, a free expansion of this scope is generous.
The fishing system is particularly interesting because it deliberately shifts pacing away from combat. By alternating between exploration, puzzle-solving (tracking rare creatures), and action, Blood & Brine offers returning players a different kind of challenge. The mystery hinted at around Jaimie and Sam’s backstory also suggests the expansion isn’t purely mechanical filler—there’s narrative substance woven in.
The indie crossover armours deserve mention as a cultural moment. Licensing character designs from peers like Dave the Diver and Cult of the Lamb requires real collaboration and speaks to a thriving indie ecosystem willing to celebrate each other’s work. For players, it’s pure fan service; for the industry, it’s a small reminder that indie studios don’t have to compete in isolation.
The timing also matters: the base game is currently 60% off as part of PlayStation’s Ready, Set, Play promotion through August 26, making this expansion launch a natural entry point for new players once they finish the campaign.
What’s Next
With Blood & Brine now live, eyes will turn to whether Odd Bug Studio plans further expansions or pivots to a new project. Players diving into Hardshell Brook’s waters will likely uncover whether Jaimie and Sam’s story delivers the narrative twist the expansion’s framing hints at.
