Square Enix and PlayStation revealed Final Fantasy VII Revelation during today’s State of Play broadcast, confirming the action RPG will launch for PS5 on April 8, 2027. As the final entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, Revelation concludes the story arc that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake and continued through Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
What’s New in Revelation
The game introduces a vastly expanded open world where players traverse using the iconic Highwind airship and their chocobo companion Piko, who now serves as both a mount and combat ally that grows stronger alongside the party. A new dynamic character-switching feature lets players instantly swap between party members while exploring, and traversal is enhanced by a grappling gun for scaling rooftops and navigating cities.
Combat receives major expansion through the Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear (FITS) System, which lets players customize party members with four specialized uniforms: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner. Each FITS alters both abilities and character appearance, creating distinct tactical possibilities. Gameplay footage showed examples including Cid in Knight FITS and Vincent in Summoner FITS.
Party choices extend to quest selection—players can decide which member takes on certain missions, shaping story events and gameplay scenarios based on those decisions. The beloved Queen’s Blood card minigame returns with a major storyline centered on Red XIII, introducing powerful new opponents and mechanics that alter match flow.
Premium Editions and Pre-Order Details
Pre-orders opened today on PlayStation Store. All editions include the Mecha-Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia as a pre-order bonus.
The Premium Edition ($standard pricing not specified) bundles the main game, Story Expansion Pass, and Early Access—granting 24-hour early entry before launch. It also includes the Reclaimant Choker accessory and early-stage support consumables.
The Premium Plus Edition adds a digital art book, digital mini soundtrack, Polydroid Alexander Summon Materia, Nymphwing Bracelet armor, and Risk Taker’s Choker accessory. The Story Expansion Pass provides access to two story-centered DLC chapters, with further details announced later.
Why This Matters
Final Fantasy VII Remake marked a watershed moment for the franchise—transforming the 1997 original into an expanded, fully-realized narrative experience. Rebirth deepened that world considerably. Revelation’s scope suggests Square Enix is doubling down on what made those entries resonate: player agency, combat depth, and environmental scale. The FITS system parallels the materia customization legacy that defined VII’s original appeal, while the open-world airship exploration and chocobo integration directly honor franchise touchstones.
The Queen’s Blood expansion with Red XIII ties to longstanding fan investment in the character’s role throughout the remake trilogy. Dynamic party switching during exploration is a modern quality-of-life feature that reflects how action RPGs have evolved since Rebirth’s release.
What to Watch
Details on the two Story Expansion Pass chapters remain forthcoming. Players should watch for further reveals on DLC scope and release timing as April 2027 approaches, along with any additional gameplay showcases before launch.
