Type-Moon’s remake of the original Fate/Extra RPG is launching worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027, Sony announced during a recent State of Play presentation. Fate/Extra Record completely rebuilds the 2010 original for modern hardware, featuring expanded story content, renewed character graphics, and an entirely new strategic deck-building battle system.
What’s New in This Remake
Fate/Extra Record retains the core Holy Grail War premise—128 Masters summoning legendary Servants to battle in a tournament set within SE.RA.PH, a digital world created by the Moon Cell Automaton. Players take on the role of a Master with no memory of entering the conflict, forced to contract a Servant and fight for survival. The journey involves gathering intelligence on enemy Servants, exploring the Arena across multiple floors to strengthen your own Servant, and ultimately facing one-on-one battles in the Decisive Battle tournament structure.
The battle system is the most significant overhaul. Combat now uses customizable Command Card decks where players choose from three command types—Attack, Guard, and Skill—each with different tactical applications. New Commands unlock through treasure boxes and defeated enemies, encouraging deck-building strategy tailored to your chosen Servant’s combat style. Players can pick from three different Servants, each with unique abilities and fighting approaches.
Beyond gameplay, the presentation has been updated throughout. Story content has been expanded, and character visuals have been completely refreshed for the current generation.
Why This Matters for Fate Fans
Fate/Extra holds special significance in the franchise’s history—it was the series’ first RPG when it launched in Japan in July 2010, following Type-Moon’s breakthrough 2004 PC visual novel Fate/stay night. The original Extra helped establish the Fate universe as something beyond visual novels, eventually growing into a sprawling multimedia franchise that now spans over 100 titles across games, anime, manga, novels, and apps.
This remake targets both newcomers and longtime fans. The modernized interface, updated visuals, and streamlined deck-building system make it more accessible for players unfamiliar with the original game, while the expanded story and fresh battle mechanics offer veterans a genuinely new experience rather than a simple port.
Sony is offering multiple editions at launch. A standard digital edition releases on both platforms, while a Digital Deluxe Edition includes cosmetic costumes, an arranged music pack drawn from the original game’s soundtrack, plus digital versions of the art book and soundtrack.
What’s Next
With January 2027 arrival locked in, fans of the Fate franchise should expect more details about the remake’s specific features and story expansions in the months leading up to release. The deck-building mechanics in particular will likely be a focus as players prepare to enter the Moon Holy Grail War.
