Ubisoft is moving further into generative AI, and it has given its internal project a name that feels pulled straight out of sci-fi horror. According to recent trademark filings, the publisher behind Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry is referring to its new suite of AI initiatives as ‘Motherbrain.’

What We Know About Motherbrain

While the company has yet to make a public announcement, trademark applications surfaced via reports from The Game File and Kotaku reveal the scope of the project. The filings detail software designed to create interactive content and video games, as well as AI services intended for analyzing data and facilitating interaction with human users.

This isn’t Ubisoft’s first foray into the space. The studio previously introduced ‘Ghostwriter,’ a tool meant to assist developers in writing NPC dialogue, and has publicly pushed its ‘Teammates’ shooter project as its first playable generative AI experience. CEO Yves Guillemot has been vocal about his belief that this technology represents a “revolution” comparable to the industry-wide shift from 2D to 3D gaming.

Context for the Industry

The choice of the name Motherbrain—a clear nod to the iconic, malevolent supercomputer from the Metroid series—certainly stands out, though it remains unclear if this is a literal internal codename or a broader branding effort.

This internal development comes during a turbulent period for the company. Ubisoft has faced significant restructuring throughout the year, including the closure of multiple studios and the layoff of hundreds of employees as the publisher attempts to navigate its current business trajectory. Whether Motherbrain becomes a core component of future Ubisoft titles remains to be seen, but the publisher’s accelerating investment suggests that AI will remain a primary focus for their development pipeline for the foreseeable future.
