Id Software, the legendary studio behind iconic franchises like Doom and Quake, is looking to the future with optimism despite enduring a major staff reduction earlier this year. As reported by Eurogamer, the developer was one of the studios hardest hit by Microsoft’s broader business “reset” within its gaming division, seeing roughly 136 employees leave the company.
Leadership perspective on current viability
Despite the scale of the departures, id Software co-studio director Marty Stratton maintains that the team is “doing great.” In comments shared with journalists via IGN, Stratton acknowledged the weight of the layoffs, noting that “about half of our studio” had exited. However, he emphasized that there was a “very deliberate effort” to ensure the company remains viable across its game development and technology departments moving forward.
This sentiment echoes earlier comments from co-studio head Hugo Martin, who has previously stated that the remaining team size is comparable to the headcount during the development of 2016’s Doom. Martin has maintained that the studio’s proprietary id Tech engine remains “alive and well.”
Strategic collaboration and engine stability
While some staff members, such as programmer Chris Hays, previously expressed concerns regarding the feasibility of maintaining triple-A production standards with a significantly smaller workforce, the studio is moving ahead by doubling down on existing partnerships. Stratton highlighted that the team is now working “more closely than ever” with MachineGames, the studio behind the modern Wolfenstein titles and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
Stratton noted that this enhanced collaboration began prior to the recent layoffs, fueled by the talent of both engineering teams. While id Software’s specific next project has yet to be announced, the collaboration suggests a strong focus on shared technology and development synergy as they chart their path forward.
Why it matters
For players, the primary concern revolves around the future output of one of gaming’s most technically revered studios. With the id Tech engine serving as the backbone for the studio’s high-performance, visually impressive titles, the stability of that team is crucial for maintaining the performance standards fans expect.
While leadership asserts that the studio remains on an “amazing path,” the consolidation of resources and deeper integration with MachineGames marks a significant shift in how the developer will operate. Players should keep an eye on upcoming project announcements to see how this restructured internal team applies the id Tech engine to future releases.
