Electronic Arts has reportedly tasked two of its major studios, DICE and Respawn Entertainment, to collaborate on a new entry in the Star Wars: Battlefront series. According to a report by VGC, citing Variety, EA confirmed to staff during a series of recent company cuts that the two teams are working together on a “future project.” Multiple sources speaking to the outlet have identified this project as Star Wars: Battlefront 3.
Connecting the studios
This development aligns with previous reporting from Electronic Gaming Monthly, which claimed that Lucasfilm had been in talks with studios, including DICE, regarding the greenlighting of a third installment. DICE, the developer behind the Battlefield franchise, was responsible for the previous two modern Battlefront games, while Respawn has established a strong pedigree in the Star Wars universe with the Jedi series and the strategy title Zero Company.
The path from Battlefront 2
The news arrives as interest in the series remains high. While Battlefront 2 faced significant controversy at its 2017 launch due to its microtransaction model, EA eventually removed those systems and supported the title with years of updates before ending official support in 2020. In a shift of sentiment, the game saw a massive resurgence by 2025, reaching its highest-ever concurrent player counts on Steam thanks to grassroots campaigns on Reddit and TikTok.
Former developer Mats Helge Holm, who worked on both the base and Celebration editions of the game, previously indicated that there is significant internal desire to revisit the franchise. Holm noted last year that he and many other former developers would be interested in returning to “get the gang back together” for a new entry.
Why it matters
For players, this news signals a potential revival of a series that has seen a massive, organic resurgence in recent years. If the development holds true, it represents a collaborative effort between the original creators of the modern Battlefront games and the team behind some of the most acclaimed recent Star Wars titles.
With the community sentiment for the previous installment reaching an all-time high in 2025, expectations for a successor will be substantial. Players should watch for official confirmation from EA or Lucasfilm to see if these studio assignments translate into a formal announcement, and whether the new title will address the long-term requests from the community that kept Battlefront 2 alive for so many years.
