In the wake of BioWare’s sudden shutdown and the reported cancellation of Mass Effect 5, the gaming community is fighting back. According to reporting from GamesRadar, a fan-led petition titled “Save Mass Effect” has gathered nearly 200,000 signatures in just one week.

Community push for development

The petition does not explicitly demand a reversal of BioWare’s closure. Instead, it urges publisher Electronic Arts (EA) to commit to the continued development of the Mass Effect franchise by providing the necessary funding, staffing, and time required to maintain the series’ high standards. The petition outlines two potential paths forward for EA: either continue internal development on new entries or, should the publisher be unwilling to invest in the project, license the intellectual property to another studio capable of carrying the legacy forward.

“By ensuring the ongoing expansion and enhancement of the Mass Effect universe, EA would not only preserve a cherished piece of gaming history but also continue to contribute to the cultural and emotional impact it has on gamers worldwide,” the petition states.

Voices from the Normandy

The movement has gained significant traction, receiving backing from the actors behind the franchise’s iconic protagonist. As noted by GamesRadar, Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale, who voiced the male and female versions of Commander Shepard, respectively, have both publicly supported the campaign. Hale suggested that a collaborative effort involving investors, a game studio, and potential crowdfunding could be a viable path to restore the series, while Meer encouraged fans to “hold the line” and sign the petition.

Why it matters

For players, this petition represents a desperate attempt to influence the future of a beloved sci-fi RPG cornerstone. With the cancellation of the next planned Mass Effect title, fans are currently facing a future where the franchise remains at a standstill.

This movement highlights the deep connection many players feel toward the series, and it places the onus squarely on EA to determine if the Mass Effect brand still has a place in its development roadmap. Players should keep an eye on official announcements from EA regarding whether they intend to address these community concerns or if the franchise will remain in its current state of uncertainty.
