A glimpse into what could have been has surfaced online, following a leaked internal trailer for a cancelled Mass Effect title. According to a report from Rock Paper Shotgun, the game, internally dubbed Mass Effect Universe, was being developed by BioWare before the studio faced closure by EA.

Romain Toutain, BioWare’s franchise technical director since 2022, discussed the project during a now-removed Twitch stream. Translated clips surfaced on BlueSky by user @loustica-lucia, revealing that the name ‘Universe’ was chosen to reflect the game’s ambitious approach to player choice. Toutain explained that the project aimed to allow players to import saves from previous Mass Effect entries to create what were essentially parallel timelines.

How the ‘Universe’ system worked

Toutain noted that the system aimed to provide “absolute autonomy” by treating everything in the game as stateful. Rather than a simple import tool like the Dragon Age Keep, this system utilized logical equations to ensure player choices remained consistent across branching paths. If a player made a decision—such as killing a character required for a future mission—the system would analyze the logic, either creating a new narrative branch, adjusting conditions to keep the path open, or acknowledging the mission failure based on established design parameters.

“At any time, you could pause [the game] and ask a system that solved logical equations, ‘Is this valid?'” Toutain stated. He admitted that while the framework was “difficult to set up,” it functioned well as a tool for managing complex, reactive storytelling.

Why it matters

For fans of the franchise, this reveal offers a bittersweet look at the scope BioWare intended for the series’ future. The proposed system promised a level of narrative reactivity that could have redefined how player decisions ripple through a long-running sci-fi RPG saga.

Because the project was under development prior to the studio’s shutdown, the “Universe” system serves as a technical “what if” rather than an upcoming feature. There are no indications of this technology being salvaged for other projects, nor any information regarding the game’s original release scope, localizations, or platform availability. For now, it remains a snapshot of a cancelled ambition that players will likely never experience.
