In the wake of EA’s decision to shut down BioWare and cancel the highly anticipated fifth Mass Effect title, renowned composer Austin Wintory has provided fans a glimpse into what might have been. According to a report by Game Informer, Wintory has publicly released nearly 20 minutes of original music he composed for the project.
Wintory, known for his work on *Journey* and *The Banner Saga*, revealed on Bluesky that he had been in discussions with BioWare and EA for years regarding the score. To showcase his vision for the franchise’s future, he composed and recorded eight tracks in 2025. He noted that he was unaware of the specific narrative details of the now-canceled game, describing his efforts as “narratively speculative.”
A sonic tribute to a canceled project
In the video uploaded to his YouTube channel, Wintory explained that his compositions were intended as a “love letter” to the series. He aimed to pay homage to the original score by Jack Wall and Sam Hulick while incorporating a heavier emphasis on analog synthesizers and complex orchestral arrangements, comparing the hybrid sound to the style found in *The Matrix*.
Reflecting on the studio’s abrupt closure, Wintory expressed his condolences to his former collaborators. “Receiving the news alongside everyone else that EA had decided to not only cancel the project but shutdown BioWare entirely was a deeply felt loss,” Wintory stated, as cited by Game Informer. He thanked the music teams at BioWare and EA for the opportunity to contribute to the franchise, even if only in a conceptual capacity.
Why it matters
For the Mass Effect community, the release of these tracks serves as a bittersweet look at the creative direction the series was heading before its sudden cancellation. With BioWare’s closure, this music joins a growing list of unearthed assets, including a recently leaked cinematic trailer, that offer the only remaining evidence of the project’s development.
Players mourning the loss of the franchise should be aware that these compositions are purely speculative efforts from the composer and do not reflect finalized game content. As EA has shuttered the studio responsible for the series, there is currently no indication of the intellectual property’s future, leaving fans to rely on these developer tributes to fill the void.
