The collaborative spirit between two major pillars of the platforming genre is set to reach a new milestone this winter. Following Rayman’s surprise cameo in the 2024 Astro Bot game, the favor is being returned in the upcoming release of Rayman Legends Retold. As officially reported by the PlayStation.Blog, players will be able to suit up as the iconic Captain of the Bots when the game launches on December 3, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. This PS5-exclusive costume serves as the centerpiece of a cross-studio partnership involving Ubisoft Milan, Ubisoft Montpellier, and Team Asobi.
How to get the skin
The Astro Bot costume will be available for free to all players at launch. To access the cosmetic, players simply need to progress until their first visit to the game’s resident tailor, Victor Velour, located at his in-game costume shop. This outfit is designed to seamlessly integrate with the base character model, allowing fans to experience the reimagined title while sporting the signature look of Sony’s mascot.
Designing the crossover
In an interview with the PlayStation.Blog, Lead Character Artist Quentin Chaillet discussed the technical challenges of merging two distinct visual identities. The development team had to adapt Astro Bot’s sleek, metallic, and futuristic aesthetic to fit Rayman’s more organic and handcrafted visual identity. This required a careful balancing act of incorporating Astro Bot’s reflective metallic parts and glowing blue elements while maintaining the iconic proportions that define Rayman’s silhouette, such as his large nose, big shoes, and absence of limbs.
“It was a really interesting exercise in finding the right balance between two very different visual identities and making them feel like they naturally belong together,” Chaillet explained. Art and World Director Guillaume Arvieu noted that the teams were driven by the shared DNA of the franchises, specifically their focus on fluid movement, diverse biomes, and a sense of constant discovery. Arvieu emphasized that both games aim to evoke joy and wonder, making the collaboration a natural extension of the creative philosophies shared by Ubisoft and Team Asobi.
Why it matters
This partnership represents more than just a cosmetic addition; it serves as a bridge between the long-time fans who remember Rayman from the original PlayStation era and the newer generation currently playing Astro Bot. By uniting these characters, the developers are celebrating the history of the platforming genre while highlighting the medium’s capacity to reinvent itself.
Rayman Legends Retold arrives in December as a bold reimagining of the beloved platformer, featuring a refreshed narrative, updated visuals, and several gameplay expansions. Players can look forward to exploring a mysterious new realm, jumping through new musical stages, and utilizing couch co-op for up to four players.
