Laika Studios’ latest stop-motion feature, Wildwood, has officially entered the pre-order phase for physical media. Despite having only recently arrived in theaters, fans can already secure their copies of the film across various formats, including a 4K Steelbook edition. The project marks another milestone for the studio, which has built a reputation for its distinct stop-motion animation style seen in previous projects like Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing Link.

Collecting the Stop-Motion Fantasy

While specific details regarding the Steelbook’s cover art, design, and inclusion of bonus features remain unannounced, pre-orders are currently active across major retailers including Amazon, Gruv, and Walmart. The limited-edition 4K Steelbook is priced at $39.99. Those opting for standard releases can find the 4K standard edition for $36.99, a Blu-ray version for $27.99, and a DVD release for $24.99. Potential buyers are encouraged to act early, as limited-edition steelbooks of this nature have a tendency to sell out quickly.

Critical Reception

As reported by IGN, the film continues Laika’s legacy of meticulous stop-motion craftsmanship. Directed by Travis Knight, the film features a star-studded voice cast that includes Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Charlie Day, Jemaine Clement, and Tom Waits. In their review, IGN critic Tom Jorgensen described the film as an “arresting, exciting fantasy epic,” praising the handmade world and the emotional weight brought to the story of grief and growing up. Although rated PG-13, the film’s fable-like quality aims to appeal to a wide range of ages. The narrative follows Prue, a teenage girl, and her classmate Curtis as they navigate an enchanted forest to rescue her abducted brother.

Why it matters

For collectors, the primary concern is the ambiguity surrounding the release window. According to the reporting from IGN, the official physical media launch date is currently undetermined, as the timing remains dependent on the film’s theatrical performance. Because the physical release date is to be determined and limited-edition steelbooks are prone to selling out, fans of Laika’s work who appreciate the specific tactile charm of their previous stop-motion films may want to place pre-orders early to secure a copy. No specific regional availability or localized pricing outside of the stated USD listings has been confirmed at this time. Future updates regarding release dates and bonus content will be provided as more information becomes available.
