We might finally have a name for the next chapter of Bethesda’s epic RPG series. According to a report from VGC, citing details originally shared by The Verge, Microsoft is preparing to officially reveal the full title for the next Elder Scrolls game as soon as next month.
The reveal timeline
The report suggests that the official announcement may be planned around the 15th anniversary of the previous Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim. While the community has spent years calling the project ‘The Elder Scrolls 6,’ insiders believe the official title will be The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.
Setting the scene
Beyond just the name, the report sheds light on where we might be heading. It is widely believed that Sentinel will be set in Hammerfell, a region that has appeared in previous franchise entries like Daggerfell, The Elder Scrolls Online, and the 1998 title The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard. This aligns with long-standing fan speculation that the game would focus on the area around Iliac Bay, the body of water dividing High Rock and Hammerfell.
Former Bethesda veteran and Skyrim lead designer Bruce Nesmith, speaking to GoHumanize, noted that a setting near Iliac Bay would open up massive potential for new gameplay mechanics. Nesmith expressed excitement about the possibility of introducing seafaring elements to the series, suggesting it could allow for dedicated skill trees related to boats or even water-based traversal and creatures.
Why it matters
For players, this is the most concrete news we have had about the game’s direction in a long time. If the ‘Sentinel’ title and Hammerfell setting are confirmed, it effectively validates years of fan theories regarding the geographical focus of the next game. For those of us who have spent countless hours in the provinces of Tamriel, this shift toward a more maritime-heavy environment promises a refreshing mechanical departure from the series’ traditional land-locked exploration.
While the setting details are reportedly not expected to be part of the official title announcement next month, the confirmation of the game’s name would mark a significant step forward in development transparency. Keep an eye out for official word from the Xbox and Bethesda camp.
