Monster Hunter Outlanders has officially launched, marking a new attempt by Tencent’s TiMi Studio Group to bring a “full-fat” version of the popular Capcom franchise to mobile devices. Unlike previous mobile outings that utilized augmented reality, the developers behind this title aimed to distill the core feel, combat impact, and weapon systems of the main series into a portable format.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Bryan Li, the development director for the project, explained that the team prioritized creating a “truthful and authentic” experience while ensuring it felt native to touch-screen controls. To accommodate different player skill levels, the game features a Classic Mode for experienced action fans and a simplified Adventure Mode for newcomers.

Adapting for mobile play

Transitioning the franchise to mobile required significant adjustments to play session lengths. Li noted that the studio conducted numerous playtest and live test sessions to find the “sweet spot” for gameplay duration, ensuring the experience remains fluent for mobile users. The game also introduces a new main storyline and features like zip lines and ballistas to aid in navigation, alongside a crafting system that maintains the essence of the original series.

Regarding the monetization model, Li clarified that the game is free-to-play, with the full story and core systems accessible without cost. Monetization is limited to three categories: acquiring new adventurers, vanity items for self-expression, and convenience-focused items that save time. The developers emphasized that they have “zero intention” to sell power, ensuring customization does not impact gameplay balance.

Why it matters

For players, the launch represents a shift in how the Monster Hunter experience is delivered on the go. By focusing on a more traditional action-RPG structure rather than the location-based mechanics found in other mobile spin-offs, TiMi is aiming to provide a direct bridge for fans accustomed to console and PC play.

Collaboration between TiMi and Capcom was essential to this process, with both companies sharing knowledge on player expectations and game design. As TiMi continues to manage the long-term, free-to-play live service elements of the title, players can expect ongoing updates based on the collaborative roadmaps established between the two studios.
