Data released by market analysis firm Circana suggests that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 saw a lower percentage of active players during its launch window compared to last year’s Black Ops 7. As reported by Eurogamer, the firm’s Player Engagement Tracker indicates shifting interest across major gaming platforms.
According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, 19 percent of PlayStation users played Modern Warfare 4 in the week ending October 24, alongside 17 percent on Xbox and 4.2 percent on Steam. These figures represent a notable decline for console platforms when compared to the launch week performance of Black Ops 7, which saw 23 percent engagement on PlayStation and 29 percent on Xbox. Steam remains the outlier in the data, showing an increase from 1.5 percent with last year’s title to 4.2 percent for the latest release.
The Game Pass and content gap
Analysts point to several factors that may be contributing to this decline. The significant drop in activity on Xbox is largely attributed to Modern Warfare 4 not launching day-and-date on Game Pass, unlike its predecessor. While Game Pass availability often serves as a major driver for active player counts, the absence of this subscription integration appears to have impacted early engagement.
On the PlayStation front, the decline is less clear, though experts suggest it may be linked to the successful release of Black Ops 1 and 2 ports earlier this year. These titles may have redirected the attention of lapsed players who remain interested in the franchise but have drifted away from modern entries. Meanwhile, Activision’s own public messaging regarding the game’s launch has been notably muted; a statement from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma celebrated the franchise’s $40 billion lifetime revenue milestone but notably omitted any direct mention of Modern Warfare 4.
Why it matters
For the average player, these engagement numbers provide a signal about the health of the live-service ecosystem and how platform-specific strategies—like subscription services—directly influence the size of the active player base. A smaller initial player pool can sometimes impact matchmaking times and the overall longevity of seasonal content cycles.
Players should keep an eye on how developer updates and upcoming content drops address these engagement trends. While the franchise remains firmly in the top 10 rankings on all platforms, the shift in momentum suggests that community interest is becoming increasingly fragmented across legacy ports and newer premium releases.
