The Coalition has officially kicked off expansive anniversary celebrations for the Gears of War franchise, bringing a highly requested fan-favorite game mode back to Gears of War: E-Day. As reported by Game Rant, players can now jump into the classic Guardian Versus mode. This mode serves as a staple of the franchise, tasking teams with protecting a designated leader against an opposing squad that also has a leader to defend. In this specific iteration, once a team leader is eliminated, enemy respawns are disabled to heighten the pressure. Furthermore, if the round timer runs out, leader locations are revealed to ensure a fast finish.

Gears of War: E-Day, an Xbox exclusive launched in October, takes players back in time to the beginning of the Locust conflict, placing them in the boots of protagonist Marcus Fenix. Despite reports of underwhelming sales performance, with estimates suggesting just over 400,000 copies sold across PC and Xbox and roughly 1.7 million players accessing the title via Xbox Game Pass, the studio is moving forward with significant post-launch support.

New Content and Challenges

In addition to the return of Guardian, The Coalition has introduced a limited-time mission for Horde Siege called For The Queen. This mission significantly increases the tactical challenge by disabling Supply Caches across the map, forcing players to rely entirely on their initial loadouts and items scavenged from defeated enemies.

To mark the franchise’s 20th anniversary, the studio has launched a series of limited-time challenges. Active now, these tasks include performing 20 Curb Stomp Executions, winning five matches of Guardian, finishing the For The Queen mission on Commander difficulty or higher, deploying 25 pieces of equipment, and securing 100 kills with OG Gears weapons. Completion of these challenges grants access to exclusive rewards, including a special 20th Anniversary weapon skin, new poses, and character skins. A free Brothers to the End pose is also currently available for players to claim directly in the game store.

Why it matters

This update is the start of a busy schedule for the title as it moves through the final months of 2026. For the dedicated community, the return of a tactical mode like Guardian provides the high-stakes experience that many veteran fans felt was missing since the game’s launch. Players should mark their calendars for November 7, the actual franchise anniversary date, as The Coalition has teased a special gift for the entire player base. While the developer has not provided specifics on the gift, it serves as a major milestone before the studio transitions into the upcoming 20 Years of Gears event and the launch of Season 2 this December.
