Apex Legends has launched its latest season, titled Cipher, bringing a substantial shake-up to the meta through a major firmware update for Crypto, the addition of the Akimbo Wingman, and new high-stakes map objectives. According to the official developer update, these changes are designed to shift the pace of combat and reward aggressive play.
Crypto’s Aggressive Pivot
Crypto is receiving a significant rework aimed at moving him from a passive observer to an active intel-gatherer. His Surveillance Drone no longer relies on a cooldown, instead functioning on a battery system. Additionally, the drone features a new Sentry Mode that tags enemies within its line of sight for the entire squad. Perhaps most notably, Crypto’s EMP Ultimate can now be deployed instantly with a single button press, allowing for faster engagement during chaotic firefights.
New Combat Mechanics and Objectives
Firepower options are expanding with the introduction of the Akimbo Wingman. Players can now dual-wield the high-precision revolvers, combining the weapon’s inherent accuracy with increased damage potential. On the map, players will encounter new ‘Strongholds.’ These locations act as high-tier loot hotspots that replace traditional Care Packages. While they offer premium rewards—including crate weapons, Corrupted Attachments, and EVO for the squad—opening them triggers an alarm that signals your position to nearby teams, turning every raid into a tactical gamble.
Rebalancing Legends and Ranked Play
Several existing Legends are getting a reboot to keep the game fresh. Revenant is becoming more aggressive with shorter cooldowns on his Tactical and Ultimate, with new upgrades that extend his Ultimate duration upon securing knocks. Lifeline is also seeing changes, including faster D.O.C. cooldowns and the ability to self-heal while gliding, plus new revives that provide a protective shield. For competitive players, the game is introducing Legend Bans in Diamond lobbies and above. Every player casts a vote, and the most voted-for Legends will be excluded from that specific match, forcing teams to adapt their strategies on the fly.
Why it matters
For the average player, the Cipher update represents a massive shift in how you navigate the battlefield. If you enjoy playing aggressive, the changes to Crypto and the addition of the Akimbo Wingman offer new ways to dictate the pace of a match. The introduction of Strongholds also adds a new layer of risk-reward decision-making—you’ll have to decide if the high-tier loot is worth revealing your location to the entire lobby.
Competitive players in higher ranks will now face the challenge of dynamic team compositions due to the new Legend ban system. This makes it crucial to diversify your pool of usable Legends rather than relying on a single ‘main.’ Keep an eye on your tactical loadouts, as these adjustments, combined with the new Mythic Volt SMG skins and Battle Pass rewards, suggest a season that favors adaptability and rapid information gathering.
