After a highly successful run in theaters that saw it climb to the top of the highest-grossing video game movie charts, the new Resident Evil adaptation directed by Zach Cregger is officially available for purchase and rental on digital platforms, including Prime Video. As reported by IGN, the film arrives on digital storefronts just over 45 days after its initial cinematic debut.
A Commanding Box Office Run
The movie has proven to be a financial powerhouse, recently crossing the $400 million mark at the global box office. If the film continues its momentum and gains an additional $30 million, it is projected to enter the top 10 highest-grossing horror movies of all time. While the film is currently available to buy digitally for $24.99, the film is also up for preorder on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K, though the DVD release still doesn’t have a release date. Furthermore, while Sony Pictures Entertainment has a ‘Pay-1’ deal in place with Netflix, the film is not expected to hit the streaming service until early 2027.
Creative Vision and Fan Reception
The journey to this success was not without friction. Director Zach Cregger noted in interviews that he felt as though he were on an “apology tour” during the pre-release phase, as fans expressed frustration over the film’s departure from a direct adaptation of specific Capcom game characters like Leon Kennedy. Cregger maintained his focus on capturing the “feeling” of the games rather than recreating specific narrative arcs.
In his review for IGN, Tom Jorgensen encouraged skeptics to look past their expectations of a direct game adaptation, praising the film as a “jet-fueled horror experience” that balances tension and humor with a strong lead performance from Austin Abrams.
Why it matters
For gamers, the movie’s success has had a tangible ripple effect on the franchise’s health. The theatrical release directly spurred renewed interest in the source material, with sales of Resident Evil 2 Remake on PS5 jumping more than 50% during the movie’s opening week. Whether you are a die-hard fan of the Capcom titles or a newcomer to the horror genre, the film has bridged a gap that has led to increased visibility for the gaming franchise.
Looking ahead, the success of this adaptation has already emboldened studios to pursue further video game-to-film projects. While Cregger previously expressed that he was done with the franchise, he has since signaled a potential willingness to return for future sequels, leaving the door open for what comes next in this cinematic iteration of the series.
