The decision to keep Gears of War: E-Day exclusive to Xbox consoles appears to have had little impact on hardware performance, according to recent analysis from Circana’s Mat Piscatella. Speaking to The Game Business, and as reported by GamesRadar+, the strategy has failed to generate the hardware movement Microsoft may have hoped for.
Sales trends and market data
Despite the push to market the game as a console-exclusive title, hardware trends for Xbox have remained stagnant or declined. Piscatella highlighted that UK sales data from Nielsen IQ recorded a 22% drop in October, while Circana observed no meaningful uplift in the US market following the release. Comparing this to competitors, Piscatella noted that Marvel’s Wolverine helped boost PS5 sales in September, proving that exclusive content can still drive hardware and accessory purchases for other platforms when the IP resonates.
Beyond just the hardware, the shift in Game Pass strategy—specifically the removal of Call of Duty as a day-one release—has further complicated the picture. Piscatella noted that this move resulted in a significant loss of engagement, without providing a corresponding benefit to platform growth. Estimates suggest that Gears of War: E-Day sold roughly 62,000 copies on Xbox, compared to 1.7 million players accessing the title through Game Pass, leading the analyst to conclude that the $70 premium SKU is effectively “dead” on the platform.
Why it matters
For players, these findings underscore a shift in how the Xbox ecosystem is performing. Piscatella states that it is “really hard to find any signs of positivity or hope” on the platform currently, suggesting that the current strategy of courting the most vocal segments of the fan base on social media is not translating into broader, tangible platform growth or sustainable engagement numbers.
For those invested in the Xbox ecosystem, the data suggests that reliance on traditional exclusive models is not yielding the historical results of the past. As Microsoft navigates these trends, players should continue to watch how Game Pass library changes and future hardware initiatives evolve to address the current engagement dip. There is no information regarding specific impacts on the GCC or wider Middle East regions, such as local server availability or language-specific pricing adjustments.
