Warriors of Light will need to clear their calendars for a few extra weeks. As reported by IGN, the next major expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, titled Evercold, has been delayed from its original January 2027 window.
New Release Date and Early Access
During the FFXIV Fan Fest in Japan, director and producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed that the expansion has been pushed back by four weeks. The official launch for Evercold is now set for February 23, 2027. Players looking to jump in ahead of the general public can access the content early starting February 19, 2027. The announcement accompanied the reveal of the expansion’s full opening cinematic, which traditionally serves as the final teaser for upcoming content.
Zephyr Job and Expansion Features
Alongside the delay, Square Enix pulled back the curtain on a new ranged DPS job called Zephyr. This class features a crossbow as its primary weapon and utilizes an avian companion for combat support. Zephyr joins the previously announced Tank job, Bastion, as part of the 8.0 version update.
Additional highlights shared at the Fan Fest include details on the upcoming story direction and fundamental gameplay adjustments. The expansion is also set to include two major crossover raid series: one featuring Neon Genesis Evangelion and another centered on Final Fantasy VII. Pre-orders for Evercold are scheduled to begin on November 4, 2026, with bonus items for early adopters to be detailed throughout the remainder of the event.
Why it matters
For the player base, this four-week delay pushes the start of the 8.0 era slightly further into the first quarter of 2027. While a shift in schedule is never ideal, it provides the development team with additional time to polish the new world, story, and complex additions like the Zephyr and Bastion jobs before the expansion goes live.
Players should keep an eye out for the upcoming pre-order details on November 4, as these typically define the incentive structure for early adopters. With a massive influx of content—including two high-profile crossover raid series—the transition to version 8.0 represents a significant milestone for the longevity of the game, and keeping the release stable is a key part of that rollout.
