Final Fantasy VII’s return to Nintendo hardware is now complete in plan: all three parts of the remake trilogy are on or coming to Nintendo Switch 2. Series director Naoki Hamaguchi said bringing the project back to a Nintendo platform “kind of feels like fate,” given the original game’s history.
Where each part stands
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade launched on Switch 2 on January 22, 2026, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth followed on June 3, 2026. The final chapter, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, launches on April 8, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC at the same time. That means Switch 2 owners will be able to finish the trilogy on day one alongside every other platform, rather than waiting for a later port.
Why “fate” fits
The original Final Fantasy VII was planned in its early days with Nintendo hardware in mind, but it launched on the original PlayStation in 1997. The move to CD-based hardware gave Square the space it needed for the game’s cinematic scenes and scale, and the decision became a turning point for where Japanese RPGs launched for years afterwards. Final Fantasy VI on the Super Nintendo was the last mainline entry on a Nintendo home console until the series started returning through ports and remasters.
Hamaguchi’s comment reflects that history. For the first time, a new chapter of Final Fantasy VII launches on a Nintendo platform at the same time as it does on PlayStation.
Performance and practical details
Hamaguchi has acknowledged in the past that Switch 2’s specifications make development challenging for games of this scale, and the Switch 2 versions of Remake and Rebirth were adapted to fit the hardware. Square Enix has not yet published detailed performance targets for the Switch 2 version of Revelation. Revelation is also expected to be a very large install, and physical copies on some platforms will require an additional download, so storage space is worth planning for.
Why it matters
For Nintendo players, the remake trilogy closes a gap that dates back almost three decades. One of gaming’s most influential RPG stories is now fully available on a Nintendo system, with the final chapter arriving on schedule rather than years later.
For Square Enix, the shift to launching Revelation on every major platform at once signals a clear change from the PlayStation-first release pattern used for Remake and Rebirth. Players who have not started the trilogy have time to play Remake Intergrade and Rebirth on Switch 2 before Revelation arrives in April 2027. Pricing for Revelation varies by platform and region, so check your local store listing when pre-ordering.
