Marvel’s Wolverine Director Addresses Fan Concerns Following Gameplay Reveal
Wolverine director Mike Daly defended the game's design after backlash; it launched September 15, 2026 on PS5 and a patch now lets players switch off scent trails.

Marvel’s Wolverine game director Mike Daly has responded to the online backlash that followed Insomniac Games’ extended gameplay showing in August 2026, saying criticism “comes with the territory” and calling it “a good problem to have” because it shows how invested fans are. The game has since launched, and Insomniac has already patched the feature that drew the loudest complaints.
What the gameplay reveal showed
The extended footage, released in August ahead of launch, walked through Logan’s Rage Tiers, the game’s close-quarters claw combat and technical details such as 60 frames per second on the base PlayStation 5. It also included a chase against members of the Hand and a boss fight against a Sentinel.
Reaction was mixed. The most common complaints centred on a bright scent trail that guided players during chase sequences, which many viewers saw as excessive hand-holding for a character famous for his tracking instincts. Others criticised the linear structure, even though Insomniac had already said the game would not be open world, and some felt the Sentinel encounter looked too familiar.
What Mike Daly said
Speaking to TheGamer, Daly said the team was “pretty used to” criticism and pointed to the studio’s experience with Marvel’s Spider-Man, where Insomniac learned it can make “a great game that a lot of people love” and some fans will still find things to complain about. He said the goal was “to focus completely on making the best game for the character”, a signal that the linear, story-led design was a deliberate choice rather than a cut-down open world.
Daly is the game director, working alongside creative director Marcus Smith. The pair took over the project from its original leads in 2024.
Launch and the scent trail fix
Marvel’s Wolverine released on September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5. Critics were broadly positive, with a Metacritic average of 77 at the time of writing. Reviews praised the combat, performances and visuals, while the most repeated criticisms were repetition in combat and a lack of optional activities in the linear campaign.
The scent trail debate did not end at the reveal. After launch, Insomniac first toned down the visual intensity of the trails, then released update 1.001.006 on September 25, 2026. That update adds settings toggles for Scent Trails, Audio Clues and Nightmare Roots, letting players switch off the guidance that points to collectibles such as Whisky Bottles, Material Crates and Nightmare Doors. Scent trails tied to the main story are not affected. The same hotfix also addressed community-reported crashes and several smaller bugs.
Why it matters
For players, the practical outcome is simple: if the guidance felt intrusive in the preview, it can now be turned off, and exploration for collectibles becomes a genuine search again. Anyone who skipped the game because of the reveal footage can revisit it knowing the most criticised system is now optional.
The episode is also a useful reminder of how pre-launch footage shapes perception. Daly held firm on the game’s structure, but Insomniac moved quickly on a readability issue that players could fix with a menu option. That balance, defending core design while patching friction, is likely to guide how the studio supports Wolverine in the weeks ahead.
