Nintendo’s September 9, 2026 Direct was headlined by Metroid Ravenous, a new 2D Metroid for Nintendo Switch 2 launching on January 28, 2027. The show also dated a new 3D Kirby, a Fire Emblem, a Switch Sports follow-up and a long list of third-party Switch 2 releases running into 2027.

Nintendo’s own games

Metroid Ravenous, January 28, 2027, Switch 2 exclusive. Nintendo describes it as an intense new 2D action adventure starring Samus Aran. Matching amiibo of Samus, a Chozo Statue and a Samus Metroid Suit special edition launch the same day.

Kirby and the World Beyond, spring 2027, Switch 2. A 3D adventure marking the series’ 35th anniversary.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, September 17, 2026, Switch 2. A strategy RPG set in the Dagdan Empire.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, October 22, 2026, Switch 2. It features 12 sports and island exploration.

Nintendo also dated upgraded versions of earlier games: Pikmin 4 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with Dandori Academy on November 12, 2026, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on December 3, 2026, and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Definitive Edition on February 25, 2027. Mario Kart World received a free update the same day with ten classic Super Mario Kart courses.

Major third-party releases

Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the last part of the Remake trilogy, is dated for April 8, 2027 on Switch 2, and Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion launched on Switch 2 the same day as the Direct. Monster Hunter Wilds arrives on December 4, 2026 with all title updates included. Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition all launch on October 16, 2026. Persona 4 Revival is set for May 20, 2027, and Persona 6 was confirmed for Switch 2 without a date. Mega Man: Dual Override follows in spring 2027, and Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is dated for December 10, 2026.

Where Switch 2 stands

The Switch 2 launched in June 2025, so this Direct was about building out an existing library rather than introducing new hardware. The line-up shows two clear priorities. The first is a steady run of Nintendo-made exclusives through early 2027. The second is bringing large current-generation third-party games, such as Monster Hunter Wilds and Final Fantasy VII Revelation, to Switch 2 either at launch or close to it.

For Metroid, Ravenous is the first new 2D entry since Metroid Dread in 2021. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond released in December 2025, so the series now has regular releases after a long quiet period.

Why it matters

For Switch 2 owners, the next six months are now well mapped: Fire Emblem in September, Switch Sports Resort and the Resident Evil trilogy in October, Pikmin 4 in November, Monster Hunter Wilds and Xenoblade 3 in December, then Metroid Ravenous at the end of January. Metroid Ravenous is the one to circle if you want the biggest new Nintendo release of the winter.

For anyone still deciding whether to upgrade from the original Switch, the growing number of Switch 2 exclusives and upgraded editions makes the case stronger, while Mega Man, Layton and several other titles remain available on both consoles.
