Capcom has released a demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword on Nintendo Switch 2 today, expanding on the demo that previously launched on other platforms. The Switch 2 version features an updated build with a second quest exploring the Oni Refuge, a surreal stage that introduces new gameplay mechanics and a towering boss called Daidara.
What’s in the expanded demo
The new demo quest takes players through an early slice of the story set in the Oni Refuge. According to Capcom, this stage is designed to familiarize players with fresh gameplay mechanics while introducing one of the game’s boss encounters. Alongside the demo launch, Capcom released new trailers showcasing boss battles and revealing characters Ifuu and Burai, a duo that conjures wind and thunder. The footage also includes the protagonist Miyamoto Musashi in a duel against Dokyo and a first look at gameplay showing Musashi in his fully awakened Oni form.
About Way of the Sword
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a dark fantasy action game set in Edo-period Kyoto, twisted by malevolent clouds called Malice. Players control Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai wielding the Oni Gauntlet—a mystical artifact granting power to slay Genma, monstrosities from the underworld. Musashi’s face model is based on the late Japanese film legend Toshiro Mifune. The Oni Gauntlet grants Musashi superhuman strength and the ability to absorb Genma souls and convert them into power to enhance the gauntlet’s abilities. The game features intense swordplay across bloodstained battlefields in the historic capital, where players battle powerful opponents whose martial prowess rivals Musashi’s own. The full game launches September 4 on Nintendo Switch 2.
Why this matters
The Onimusha franchise hasn’t seen a major new entry in over a decade, making Way of the Sword a significant revival for the series. Capcom’s decision to bring an expanded demo to Switch 2 signals confidence in the platform’s appeal to action game enthusiasts. For players curious about the game, the demo provides a meaningful slice of the experience—not just a brief teaser, but a full quest with narrative and mechanical depth. The emphasis on Japanese setting, samurai protagonist, and dark fantasy tone positions the game as a spiritual successor to the franchise’s classic entries, appealing to longtime fans while introducing the series to Switch 2’s playerbase.
Players can download the demo now and experience the Oni Refuge before the full release arrives in early September. The expanded demo and new trailers suggest Capcom is building momentum toward launch, with regular updates on gameplay mechanics and boss encounters.
