Level-5 has announced a full remake of Professor Layton and the Curious Village, the 2007 Nintendo DS puzzle adventure that started the series. It is coming in 2027 to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and PC.
What has changed from the original
The biggest change is the presentation. The original used 2D artwork on two small DS screens. The remake reimagines the characters and the village of St. Mystere in 3D, which Level-5 says allows more immersive exploration and deeper interaction with the world. The game’s famous animated cutscenes are being presented in high resolution and widescreen.
Level-5 has not said whether any of the original puzzles are being changed, replaced or added to. Its announcement framed the remake as a chance for new players to discover “the puzzles that started it all”, which suggests the core puzzle set is being kept. Details on voice acting and on how puzzles designed for the DS stylus will work with controllers have not been shared yet.
The original game
Curious Village follows Professor Hershel Layton and his apprentice Luke as they investigate a mystery in a strange village where almost every resident answers questions with a brain teaser. Released in Japan in 2007 and in the West in 2008, it established the series formula of a mystery story wrapped around more than a hundred self-contained puzzles, and it became one of the DS’s signature franchises.
An HD version of the game has been available on mobile for several years, so this is not the only modern way to play it. The remake goes further by rebuilding the visuals and exploration rather than upscaling the DS assets.
Where the series stands
The remake arrives alongside a brand-new entry. Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, a puzzle adventure set during the industrial age, was dated for December 10, 2026 on Switch and Switch 2 in Nintendo’s September 2026 Direct. Remaking the first game soon after gives new players a clear starting point for the series.
Why it matters
For long-time fans, this is a chance to revisit the game that started the series with modern presentation, on home consoles and PC for the first time as a full rebuild. For newcomers who arrive through New World of Steam, the remake offers an easy way back to Layton and Luke’s first case.
The platform list matters too. Launching on PlayStation 5 and PC as well as both Switch consoles takes Layton beyond its Nintendo-only roots, a sign Level-5 wants the series to reach a much wider audience. The key things to watch before the 2027 release are a firm date, whether voice acting is expanded, and how the touch-based puzzles translate to buttons.
