Take-Two Defends $80 GTA 6 Price Tag Against NBA 2K27’s $70 Launch Cost

Take-Two Interactive’s leadership is standing by Grand Theft Auto 6’s $80 price, arguing it represents exceptional value despite costing $10 more than NBA 2K27. Speaking during the company’s August 7, 2026 earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick said, “We expect that GTA 6 will be an incredible bargain as far as experiences go,” and added that “our goal is to deliver way more value to consumers than what we charge them.”
What GTA 6 costs
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The standard edition costs $80 and the Ultimate edition costs $100 in the US. Take-Two has also confirmed that the game will not ship on a disc, so boxed retail copies contain a download code.
Zelnick said the company is not trying to extract the highest possible price. “Given the hype around this title, I think we could have made any number of other pricing choices,” he said, framing $80 as a deliberate choice rather than a ceiling. He also described pre-orders as exceptional, while noting that pre-orders can be cancelled.
Why NBA 2K27 stays at $70
NBA 2K27, published by Take-Two’s 2K label, launched in September at the standard $70 console price. The gap highlights Take-Two’s tiered approach: annual sports games stay at the established price, while a once-in-a-decade release like GTA 6 sits a tier higher. The statement positions GTA 6 as a special case rather than a signal that every Take-Two release will move to $80.
How it compares with other AAA prices
GTA 6 is not the first game to test $80. Nintendo set Mario Kart World at $80 for Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, while Microsoft announced an $80 price for The Outer Worlds 2 and then reversed it to $70 after player pushback. Most major releases, including sports titles and many first-party console games, still launch at $70, which makes GTA 6 one of the few $80 games on PlayStation and Xbox.
Regional pricing is a separate question. Take-Two’s comments covered US prices, and prices in Gulf storefronts, including the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, are set per region. Players in the GCC should check local store listings rather than converting the US price directly.
Why it matters
Whether $80 feels fair will become clearer after launch, when players can judge the size of the campaign and the value of GTA Online’s next chapter. For now, Take-Two is betting that GTA 6’s draw outweighs pricing concerns, and early pre-order demand suggests many players agree.
For budget-conscious players, the choice is mainly between the $80 standard edition and the $100 Ultimate edition, so it is worth waiting for the full edition breakdown in your region before paying extra for bonus content.
