Microsoft has officially extended the deadline for finding a buyer for Arkane Lyon by one month, a move that potentially keeps the studio and its 217 employees in play following a period of intense uncertainty. As reported by IGN, the company is not only scouting for a new owner but is now actively exploring options to bring in a partner to provide financial support for the final stages of development on Marvel’s Blade.

The path forward for Arkane Lyon

The future of the studio has been in question since July 16, when staff were informed of potential closure plans as part of wider corporate cost-cutting measures. Because of specific French labor laws, Microsoft has been unable to execute a quick shutdown, a situation that has effectively bought the studio more time. A representative for Microsoft confirmed to PC Gamer that the consultation period has been extended by one month to continue exploring these options.

While the situation remains delicate, there are signs of hope. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier noted that there are multiple active paths being explored to keep the studio operational. Schreier suggested that the significant costs associated with shutting down a French studio act as a major deterrent for corporate liquidation, noting on BlueSky that he would be surprised if the studio ultimately closes.

Why it matters

For gamers, the stakes are high, as Arkane Lyon is the team behind the highly anticipated Marvel’s Blade. The game was initially slated for a 2027 release, with Bethesda’s Todd Howard expressing strong optimism about the project’s quality earlier this year. If a partner is secured to support the studio’s development efforts, it could be the key to ensuring this project reaches the finish line while protecting the jobs of the developers involved.

Meanwhile, the studio’s union continues to negotiate with Microsoft, pushing for the re-employment of staff at other Xbox studios should a buyer not be found. As negotiations continue, the industry is watching closely to see if Microsoft can successfully divest the studio rather than proceeding with a full shutdown, which remains the primary concern for the employees and fans of the developer’s work.
