The series is notorious for its convoluted lore, and that difficulty is compounded by the fact that one of its most important chapters, Kingdom Hearts Union χ, was pulled offline back in 2021. For years, the only way to experience this crucial backstory has been through YouTube archives, but that is about to change.
Finally Playing the Missing Link
Prominent modder Arena7664 recently announced the imminent release of a fan-made browser port that brings both Union χ and its companion side-story, Dark Road, to PC. These prequels serve as the foundation for the series’ future, chronicling the Keyblade War and the origins of the Master of Masters—a figure whose influence is expected to be a major driving force in Kingdom Hearts IV. Dark Road, meanwhile, provides the necessary context for Xehanort’s descent into darkness.
It is important to manage expectations: this is a port of the final state of the mobile app. While Dark Road will be fully playable thanks to the offline version Square Enix released before the game’s sunset, Union χ will remain in a “cutscene-viewer” format. Even so, this project represents the first time the actual application has been made accessible to players who missed out on the game during its original run.
