Sega’s Golden Axe Lands as an Animated Series on Paramount+

If you are looking for something to watch this week, the classic Sega side-scroller Golden Axe has officially been adapted into an animated comedy series, now streaming on Paramount+. The show brings the iconic 1989 arcade brawler to the small screen with a comedic twist.

Star-Studded Voice Cast

The series features an impressive lineup of talent. Matthew Rhys, coming off a record-breaking night at the Emmys, steps into the role of the classic dwarf warrior Gilius Thunderhead. He is joined by a veteran cast of gaming and comedy favorites, including Danny Pudi (Mythic Quest, Community), Liam McIntyre (the voice of JD Fenix in Gears of War 4), Lisa Gilroy as the sorceress Tyris, and Carl Tart, who lends his voice to a humanoid panther character.

What to Expect

While the original games were straightforward fantasy action, the show leans into a more chaotic dynamic. According to Paramount+, the story follows the original trio of warriors—Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead—as they attempt to thwart the recurring villain Death Adder. Their journey is made significantly more difficult by the addition of Hampton Squib, an inexperienced, underprepared adventurer who drags the legends into his own misguided quest for heroism.
