Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is now available for preorder on Nintendo Switch 2, marking the franchise’s return to a Nintendo platform for the first time in 13 years. The game costs $69.99 and launches October 23, but there’s a catch: physical copies ship as a code in a box rather than on a game card.
What’s Available Now
Preorders are live across multiple retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop, with both physical and digital editions available at the same $69.99 price point. The physical version requires you to redeem a code on the Nintendo eShop and download the full game—you’ll get a box for your shelf, but the actual game card slot stays empty.
Activision is bundling preorder bonuses with the game: a Hunter Killer Operator Skin and Gilded Pearl Camo Pack containing two weapon camos. Digital preorders include those items plus early campaign access starting October 16, giving digital buyers a week’s head start before the October 23 launch.
Why the Code-in-a-Box Approach
The reasoning here is straightforward: Call of Duty games demand massive storage, routinely exceeding 100GB depending on which modes you install. Nintendo Switch 2 game cards currently top out at 64GB, making a physical cartridge impossible for Modern Warfare 4. The game includes a launcher app that lets you pick and choose what content to download, a system designed to manage the game’s size across platforms.
This isn’t a unique situation for Switch 2—it reflects the hardware’s real limitations when hosting AAA titles built for much larger install bases. What matters is that the full experience comes to the system: the Korea-set campaign following a young squad of South Korean soldiers and Captain Price’s parallel storyline, plus the complete multiplayer suite including the DMZ extraction mode. You’ll need a Nintendo Online subscription to play online multiplayer.
Context: A Franchise Milestone
This is the first Call of Duty release on any Nintendo platform since Call of Duty: Ghosts launched on Wii U in 2013—a 13-year gap. That Microsoft and Activision committed to bringing Modern Warfare 4 to Switch 2 signals confidence in the new hardware and Nintendo’s place in the current generation, even with the processing and storage trade-offs that require workarounds like code distribution.
The Switch 2 version includes the identical campaign and multiplayer modes available on PS5 and Xbox Series X, so the content parity is there—you’re downloading the same game everyone else is, just from the eShop instead of installing from a card.
What’s Coming
A free beta for Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2 is running this weekend, offering early hands-on time and the chance to earn cosmetic rewards like emblems and skins. Players looking to secure their copy ahead of October 23 have preorder windows open now at major retailers.
