For players who find leveling secondary characters in World of Warcraft feels more like unpaid labor than an adventure, the upcoming World of Warcraft: Forever aims to change that dynamic with a new Legacy System. As reported by GameRant, this system allows players to earn and spend account-wide points that provide incremental boosts to help flesh out their alts.
How the Legacy System Works
Starting with 65 distinct challenges, players earn Legacy Points that are shared across their Battle.net account. These points can be distributed into three specialized perk trees: Professions, Adventure, and Resourcefulness. According to the beta details, this setup allows for nuanced character builds, such as diversifying a gathering-focused alt from a primary raiding character. The most significant points are earned by leveling various classes to milestones at levels 25, 45, and 60, alongside exploration-based objectives.
To ensure the system remains approachable for new players, Blizzard has currently capped the spendable points at 16 per character for the launch. The perks themselves are designed to be subtle, offering minor gameplay cooldown reductions and profession speed increases rather than massive power spikes.
The Dungeon XP Debate
Despite the potential benefits of the Legacy System, its effectiveness is deeply tied to the ongoing controversy surrounding leveling speed. As noted by GameRant, Blizzard has intentionally shifted experience rewards away from repeated dungeon clears and into questing to encourage players to engage with the open world.
Senior game designer Josh “Aggrend” Greenfield recently defended these balance adjustments on X, stating that the team does not want dungeon-cleaving to be the optimal way to level. While adjustments have been made to increase kill XP following player feedback, testers remain concerned that the speed disparity between questing and dungeon grinding—reportedly as much as three times faster in favor of questing—leaves players with little meaningful choice in how they progress.
Why it matters
The success of the Legacy System hinges on whether the process of leveling itself feels rewarding. For players who prefer leveling through dungeons, the current XP discrepancy may make the grind feel prohibitive, undermining the intended “alt-friendly” nature of the Legacy perks. If the gap between questing and dungeon leveling remains wide at the November 4 launch, players—particularly those playing tanks and healers who traditionally rely on dungeons—may find that the new perks are not enough to offset the time investment required to build out their rosters.
Players should keep an eye on further beta patches leading up to the release, as the balance between dungeon-focused leveling and the open-world questing experience will likely be the deciding factor in how “chores”-like reaching level 60 feels for that second or third character.
