Control Story Recap: What You Need to Know Before Resonant

If you played Control back in 2019 but found the plot slipping away—you’re not alone. The game layers supernatural mystery, reality-bending objects, and a dense narrative inside the Federal Bureau of Control’s headquarters. Before diving into Control Resonant, it’s worth refreshing on protagonist Jesse Faden’s journey and the strange forces she encountered.

Control’s story centers on Jesse Faden, who enters the Bureau seeking answers about her brother Danny and a paranormal incident from their childhood. What starts as a search turns into a crash course in the Bureau’s real purpose: containing and studying Objects of Power—items with reality-warping properties that defy conventional science.

Throughout the game, Jesse discovers she has an unusual connection to these Objects of Power, granting her supernatural abilities. She becomes the Bureau’s Director, a role far more complicated than a simple promotion. The position isn’t just administrative—it comes with direct ties to otherworldly forces and ongoing threats to reality itself.

The narrative weaves together personal investigation with larger institutional secrets. Jesse uncovers that the Bureau has been tracking phenomena for decades, all while keeping its existence hidden from the public. Her brother’s past connects to these operations in ways that reshape her understanding of both her family history and her own nature.

Control also introduces the Oldest House, the Bureau’s impossible architecture that doesn’t follow normal spatial rules. Rooms shift, corridors lead to unexpected places, and the building itself seems almost alive. This setting becomes central to understanding how the Bureau operates and why Jesse’s abilities matter within it.

The game’s exploration of Objects of Power goes beyond simple “weird item” setup. Each object has its own narrative weight and mechanical impact. These aren’t just collectibles—they’re windows into the game’s world-building and the mysterious forces at play.

Jesse’s character arc involves balancing her personal mission with the weight of her new role. She’s not a traditional hero stepping into obvious greatness; instead, she’s thrust into responsibility while still processing her own trauma and unanswered questions.

If you remember Control as “that game with weird stuff in a building,” that’s not wrong—but it’s also just the surface. The weird stuff is deliberately designed, the building operates by its own rules, and Jesse’s story connects personal mystery to supernatural stakes.

Going into Resonant, knowing that Jesse leads the Bureau, understands Objects of Power, and carries unresolved questions about her brother provides necessary context. The foundation is set for her story to deepen and expand into whatever new territory Resonant explores.
