Marvel’s Wolverine is taking a different structural approach from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. In a Radio Times interview with game director Mike Daly, the studio explains that an open world was considered, but a globe-spanning journey and carefully paced, close-up combat suited a linear adventure better. This is a deliberate design decision, not an unanswered question left by an incomplete news excerpt.

Multiple destinations do not mean an open world

PlayStation’s official game page lists Canada, Tokyo and Madripoor among Logan’s destinations and confirms a single-player PS5 release on 15 September. Those locations describe where the story travels. They should not be read as a promise that players can freely move between three continuous open-world maps.

For readers deciding whether the game matches their preferences, that distinction is more useful than simply counting locations. A globe-spanning campaign can move between different environments while still controlling the order of major encounters. Conversely, the word linear does not, by itself, tell us how much optional exploration an individual mission offers. Ralify is not assigning a completion time or estimating map size from the announcement.

What players can do beyond the main path

Insomniac’s official gameplay breakdown describes Nightmare challenges, collectibles and replay features, including New Game Plus and Mission Replay through the day-one update. These are specific forms of additional activity; they are not evidence that the campaign secretly uses an open-world structure.

Our reading is that players should separate three questions when looking at launch coverage: how the campaign is arranged, what activities sit alongside it, and what remains available to revisit. A review that praises one of those aspects does not necessarily answer the other two. Someone primarily interested in wandering freely should look for actual exploration footage, while someone interested in repeating combat encounters should examine the replay options.

What remains a review question

The developer’s explanation establishes intent, not whether every transition or fight succeeds. We have not tested the finished game for this report. Claims about repetitive encounters, the quality of side activities, loading interruptions or overall pacing require hands-on evidence and should be attributed to the review that supplies it.

Before starting, check that the launch update has installed and review the accessibility settings. Treat the location descriptions as light setting spoilers and avoid detailed mission guides if discovering Logan’s journey is part of the appeal. This article concerns structure, not an optimal route through the story.
