Kill or Spare Xanthe in The Blood of Dawnwalker: Choice Outcomes Compared
Xanthe is one of three Boyars in The Blood of Dawnwalker, and uniquely among them, she can be encountered and killed early while exploring Svartrau Cathedral at night—before progressing through the standard quest structure to weaken Brencis’ court. Her backstory, revealed during The Cycle of Love quest, shows that her murders were committed to preserve her daughter, Chariklea, giving weight to the decision of whether to kill or spare her.
**Killing Xanthe**
Killing Xanthe results in Chariklea’s death, but prevents her from murdering further innocent women. You gain the Corrupted Pendant, a Legendary amulet that increases damage against mortals and grants additional vampire health. If you drain her blood, you also obtain Blood Surge, a vampire skill that causes targets to explode—instantly killing normal enemies and dealing heavy damage to bosses. Blood Surge can be found as a Phial of Xanthe’s Blood in the wild, but draining her directly is the easiest method. The trade-off is that the finale becomes more difficult.
**Sparing Xanthe**
Sparing her makes the final assault on Greifberg Castle substantially easier. You won’t encounter Blood Guard enemies, Xanthe will provide tactical advice on navigating the castle and defeating Brencis, and her trap—a series of looping rooms that can slow your progress—will be disabled. The cost is that Xanthe will likely continue killing women to keep Chariklea alive.
The choice ultimately depends on whether you prioritize the combat advantage of Xanthe’s gear and skills or prefer a mechanically smoother final section.
