Activision and developer Infinity Ward are taking a major swing at one of the most frustrating problems in competitive gaming: wallhacks. In a recent official reveal, the team announced a new anti-cheat initiative called “server culling” that will debut with the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

How Server Culling Works

Historically, multiplayer servers function by sharing positional data for all players in a match with every connected client. This means that even if an enemy is hidden behind a wall, your game client still receives the data for their location, which is exactly what allows wallhack software to “see” and highlight opponents through obstacles.

Server culling aims to break this loop by integrating occlusion layers directly into the game’s environments. By processing what is visible at a server level, the game will essentially withhold location data for players who are blocked from your line of sight. As the Call of Duty team explained, “Cheat software can’t reveal information it never receives.” If your client doesn’t get the location data for an enemy behind a wall, the wallhack has nothing to display.

Implementation and Scope

This isn’t just a band-aid fix for a single map. Activision has confirmed that server culling will be active across every multiplayer map at launch. Furthermore, the technology will be applied to the new iteration of DMZ, the Combat Outpost mode, and Warzone. This system is designed to work in tandem with existing anti-cheat measures across all platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Nintendo Switch 2. While the studio acknowledges that cheat developers will inevitably attempt to circumvent these new barriers, they expressed a commitment to disrupting the cheat marketplace and continuously updating their defensive measures.

Why it matters

For players, this is a significant step toward leveling the playing field. Wallhacks have long been a primary source of frustration in the Call of Duty community, often ruining the integrity of matches by providing cheaters with an unfair information advantage. If effective, server culling could drastically reduce the prevalence of “walling,” leading to a more consistent and fair experience in core modes and Warzone alike.

Players should keep an eye on how these systems perform when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026. While the promise of reduced cheating is welcome, the long-term effectiveness of the system will depend on how quickly cheat manufacturers attempt to evolve, and how proactively Infinity Ward continues to patch these gaps.
