If you are still recovering from the emotional weight of David Martinez’s story, you aren’t alone. According to an exclusive interview with GamesRadar+, creator Bartosz Sztybor has revealed that the upcoming second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is designed to be in “constant dialogue” with the first, despite shifting focus to an entirely new cast.

The ‘What If’ That Defined Season 2

Sztybor shared that the foundation for the new season was born from a specific thought experiment during the production of the first season: “What if David made it? What if he didn’t die?” While he imagined David potentially becoming a celebrity Edgerunner, he ultimately concluded that the character’s tragic nature meant it couldn’t end well. This exploration of what happens to legends who overstay their welcome led to the creation of Weak Kingsley, a new character voiced by Clancy Brown.

Described as a veteran edgerunner who is currently living in the shadow of his former glory, Weak serves as the thematic anchor for the new season. Sztybor notes that while the first season was a classic “zero to hero” arc, season two leans into a “hero to zero” trajectory, focusing on the harsh reality of aging out of the mercenary life in Night City.

A New Direction for Night City

While the series maintains its connection to the aftermath of the first season, it is not a direct sequel to David’s story. CD Projekt confirmed that the original protagonist’s story has reached its conclusion, stating plainly, “David is dead. But Night City lives on.” The studio’s official logline for the upcoming season asks, “In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?”

Why it matters

For fans of the original show, this transition represents a shift in perspective. You are trading the meteoric rise of a young newcomer for the grounded, gritty reality of a veteran struggling to stay relevant in a city that usually chews up its icons and spits them out. It’s a thematic pivot that aims to flesh out the lore of Night City beyond the specific beats of the first season.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 is set to release on Netflix on October 20. If you’re looking to dive back into the neon-soaked streets, keep an eye on how these new characters handle the legacy left behind by the Arasaka incident.
