A Lasting Legacy in the Credits

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 includes a heartfelt tribute to Vince Zampella, the late game designer and co-founder of Infinity Ward. According to reporting from Video Games Chronicle, the acknowledgment was first spotted by Geoff Keighley, who shared an image on X showing a dedicated screen in the game’s credits that reads: “In memoriam – Vince Zampella.”

Zampella, who passed away in a car crash in December 2025, played a foundational role in the history of the franchise. While he had not been involved with the Call of Duty series for over 15 years, his early contributions as a co-founder of Infinity Ward were essential to the development of the blockbuster series. Alongside Grant Collier and Jason West, Zampella helped establish the studio and secure a partnership with Activision specifically to challenge the Medal of Honor franchise, leading to the launch of the original Call of Duty.

Career Impact and Final Projects

Following his departure from the Call of Duty franchise after 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, Zampella went on to form Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind titles such as Titanfall and Apex Legends. In more recent years, Zampella shifted his focus to the Battlefield franchise. As noted by Video Games Chronicle, he took charge of the Battlefield series in 2021 and successfully spearheaded the development of Battlefield 6. Released earlier this year, the title marked a major comeback for the series, recording the largest launch in its history with over 7 million copies sold in its first three days.

Why it matters

For players, this memorial serves as a rare moment of professional respect between competing franchises. Despite the historical friction between Zampella and his former publisher, Activision, the inclusion of this tribute in Modern Warfare 4 recognizes his indispensable role in defining the modern first-person shooter genre.

Fans of both Call of Duty and Battlefield may view this as an acknowledgment of Zampella’s significant influence on gaming history. While this tribute does not alter gameplay mechanics or provide new content, it stands as a permanent reminder of the industry’s shared roots and the profound impact one designer can have on multiple massive, competing franchises.
