If you are the type of player who likes to jump straight into the deep end, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is officially catering to you. In a recent interview with Hardcore Gamer, series producer Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that Hard Mode will be available from the beginning of the game, a notable departure from the previous entries in the series.
A reimagined challenge
In the previous titles, *Remake* and *Rebirth*, Hard Mode was locked behind a full completion of the main story. For *Revelation*, Hamaguchi explained that the development team has “reimagined the high-difficulty experience to align with the new game design.” Because the team has significantly expanded player options and strategic freedom, they determined that the old method of simply banning items was no longer enough to create the ideal high-difficulty experience they envisioned for this project.
“Unlike *Remake* and *Rebirth*, *Revelation* offers a wide variety of end-game content even after you’ve beaten the game,” Hamaguchi said. The team aimed to design the game so that players can continue to engage with new challenges long after the credits roll.
New difficulty customization
Beyond the base Hard Mode toggle, the game introduces a specific ‘Enemy Strength’ setting. This allows players to choose between the returning Dynamic mode and a more traditional static enemy system. Hamaguchi noted that these adjustments were made to ensure a challenging environment for those seeking it while simultaneously expanding the strategic freedom available to all players.
Why it matters
For players who felt *Remake* and *Rebirth* were too easy on a first playthrough, this change is a massive win. Being able to access the highest difficulty setting immediately means you won’t have to grind through the entire game on a standard setting just to unlock the combat experience you actually want.
Since the developers have moved away from the simple item-banning restriction of previous games, it suggests that the core combat mechanics will be more deeply tuned for high-level play. If you enjoy theory-crafting and pushing your builds to the limit, this “reimagined” approach promises a more thoughtful challenge from the very first mission. Keep an eye on how these new difficulty settings interact with the promised end-game content, as it seems the developers are prioritizing replayability more than ever.
