Following a largely negative reception to the previous entry in the series, Sports Interactive and Sega are taking a new approach to the launch of Football Manager 27. As reported by Kotaku, the developer is making the upcoming soccer management simulator free to play on PC and Mac for a limited time before its November 10 release.
A new approach to early access
Starting October 29 and running through November 3, players can download and access the full version of Football Manager 27 without restrictions. This initiative replaces the studio’s traditional “Beta” or “Advanced Access” periods. Sports Interactive stated that this “FM27 Launch Preview” is intended to be closer to the final retail build than previous early access offerings. A key feature of this preview is that save files initiated during the free window can be carried over directly into the full game, as well as the paid Launch Preview, without requiring players to restart their campaigns.
Addressing past complaints
This move comes after Football Manager 26 faced significant criticism from the community, with many players labeling the game a “buggy, clunky mess.” According to the developers, FM27 has been built to address these specific points of contention. The studio has promised a cleaner, more intuitive interface, an enhanced match engine, and added layers of control for both training and match-day management.
During the free preview window, players also have the option to pre-order the game at a 10 percent discount. For those who purchase via Steam, access to the game can continue uninterrupted from the end of the free period on November 3 until the game’s full launch on November 10. It is important to note that this free preview is exclusive to PC and Mac and will not be available on consoles.
Why it matters
For players, this free preview is a low-stakes way to gauge if Sports Interactive has genuinely turned a corner after the disappointment surrounding the previous title. It allows the community to verify the promised technical improvements and interface changes firsthand without a financial commitment.
If you have been hesitant about the series due to past performance issues, this window provides the perfect opportunity to test the game’s stability on your specific hardware. Keep an eye on the transition from the free preview to the paid launch, as maintaining the ability to carry over progress is a significant shift that rewards those who jump in early to support the title.
