The latest update for Valheim, version 1.0.21, is rolling out now, bringing a extensive list of bug fixes and balance adjustments to the survival game. According to the official patch notes from the developers, the update focuses on smoothing out the adventuring experience, though players should be aware that the patch may take a few days to reach every platform due to internal upload procedures.
Bug fixes and technical polish
The update addresses several frustrating technical hiccups. Players should no longer be “yeeted” into the air when jumping on top of certain enemies, and weather effects like snow and ash storms will stop blowing inside indoor structures. For those dealing with UI annoyances, the patch fixes a bug where vendor menus failed to open after watching cinematics and corrects issues where achievements were incorrectly tied to specific difficulty levels, such as “Comfort is King” and “The Architect.”
Xbox players receive specific attention in this release, including a retroactive fix for character and world file names containing invalid characters, which previously could cause the main menu UI to disappear. Other general fixes include improvements to item handling, better-performing moose hitboxes, and corrected drop rates for Timberwood.
Balance and gameplay tweaks
Beyond bug fixes, the developers have adjusted several gameplay mechanics. Notable changes include shifting specific recipes like Baked Poteitr, Kale Chips, and Oven Pancake from the Cauldron to the Food Preparation table. Combat balance has also been tweaked; for instance, the Fire Nova damage-over-time from Kall Fimbulbringer’s Yagluth Aspect has been reduced by half, and the Nord Greatsword no longer suffers a damage penalty when striking multiple enemies simultaneously.
Additionally, the developers have introduced a new interaction for Deep North trees. These now drop Timberwood cones, which can be planted in other biomes to grow larger trees that yield more resources.
Why it matters
This update is a major quality-of-life push that should make long-term play significantly less aggravating. By fixing broken achievements, persistent weather bugs inside homes, and save-caching issues, the developers are removing friction that has hampered immersion for many players.
Even with the rollout staggered across platforms, the developers have confirmed that crossplay remains fully functional. This means you can keep playing with your friends regardless of which platform they are currently using, even if their specific version of the game has not yet received the 1.0.21 update. Keep an eye on your platform’s update queue over the next few days to ensure you are running the latest version.
