For many players, Valheim is the gold standard of the Early Access model, but behind the scenes, the game’s journey started from a place of pure necessity. In a recent interview with GamesIndustry, Iron Gate CEO Richard Svensson revealed that the game launched into Early Access simply because he “couldn’t afford to keep working on it” as a solo project.
The path to success
Despite the humble beginnings, the gamble paid off in a massive way. According to reports from GamesRadar+, Valheim reached 17 million copies sold by the time it hit its 1.0 launch in September 2026. Svensson emphasized that even with a massive budget and five years of secret development, the game never would have achieved its current level of success without the feedback loop provided by the community.
A growing scope
While the industry standard for Early Access is roughly 21 months, Valheim remained in the program for over five years. Svensson explains this extended timeline by pointing to the rapidly increasing scope of the project. While early biomes were simpler to produce, the team’s current standards for content and technical depth have expanded significantly.
“It’s not just about content anymore, and that’s what made the development time longer than we first expected,” Svensson told GamesIndustry. Despite the growth, Iron Gate has aimed to keep their team size relatively small, focusing on delivering polish that respects the core loop that players fell in love with years ago.
Why it matters
This look behind the curtain is a reminder that Early Access isn’t always a calculated corporate strategy—sometimes, it is the only way a passionate creator can keep the lights on to finish a project. For players, this highlights the symbiotic relationship between developers and the community. By supporting the game during its early stages, the community directly enabled the team to expand the game’s scope far beyond the original vision.
If you are a fan of survival titles, Valheim serves as a benchmark for how transparency and consistent community engagement can turn a modest solo project into a genre-defining juggernaut. As the team continues to iterate on their design, players can continue to watch for updates that reflect this high standard of development, knowing that the project’s longevity is rooted in the community’s early support.
