Wuhu Island, a landmark locale from the Wii era, has returned in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, bringing with it a series of environmental changes and a renewed sense of life. While early trailers for the title raised concerns among some fans due to the inclusion of ‘Sportsmates’ and a potentially bland aesthetic, a recent analysis from Kotaku suggests that the island is not only functional but arguably the best version of the setting to date.
Landscape Changes and Exploration
The island has undergone significant geographical evolution during its absence. Players will encounter a larger surrounding archipelago, newly carved mountain caves, and additional infrastructure like cafes. The layout of various sports has been integrated into the island’s natural features; for example, the basketball court is situated by a lake, while the volleyball court is nestled in a forested area.
Exploration is primarily facilitated through three modes: Prop Plane, Power Cruising, and Skateboarding. Prop Plane stands out as the core experience for discovery, featuring 105 ‘Spocco Photos’—points of interest that provide lore and rewards, such as a crown for completionists. The experience is further fleshed out with side activities, including popping balloons and locating hidden hibiscuses. Ground and sea traversal via skateboarding and power cruising have also received praise for finally allowing players to engage with the island’s geography beyond just aerial views.
Why it matters
For players, the primary shift is the transition from a static setting to an ‘alive’ environment that encourages exploration. The inclusion of lore narrated through discovery points and the diverse density of the map suggests a greater focus on environmental storytelling compared to the base version of Nintendo Switch Sports.
If you are a fan of the original Wii-era island, the updated iteration appears to offer a more curated sense of place. Players should watch for the specific mechanics introduced in the three exploration sports, particularly the control schemes for skateboarding, which allow for a more hands-on approach to navigating the island’s landmarks. As with other titles in the series, the presence of both Miis and Sportsmates remains a prominent, if polarizing, aspect of the social environment.
