Ice-Pick Lodge has released a significant update for their plague-ridden survival game, Pathologic 3. This release introduces several new features, including additional difficulty modes, a photo capture function, and new, folkloric methods for players to combat the game’s central plague. However, the most notable detail to emerge from the patch notes is the studio’s intentional refusal to address an infamous graphical glitch: an invisible apple tree.

As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, the developers have decided to embrace the bug as a deliberate artistic choice rather than remove it. In a recent Steam blog post, the team at Ice-Pick Lodge reflected on the nature of their creation, drawing parallels between the game and Marcel Duchamp’s readymade art. The developers argued that because the tree renders only its leaves while the trunk remains absent, it has transcended its status as a technical defect to become a piece of unintended performance art. The studio noted that while they initially experienced frustration regarding the asset, their annoyance eventually evolved into a strange form of affection for the impossible object.

Producer Alexander Souslov confirmed the reality of the tree in a statement to Rock Paper Shotgun, explaining that the decision to keep it was an executive artistic choice. He noted that the asset began rendering incorrectly at an unknown point in development, leaving behind only its foliage. While the team considered fixing it, they ultimately decided against spending limited development resources on the task, opting instead to view the spectral plant as an act of creation without a creator. Because this update is expected to be the final major patch for the title, the invisible apple tree is now a permanent fixture of the game world.

For players curious to find this piece of digital folklore, the tree is located near the in-game Cathedral. The developers clarified that the tree’s behavior is inconsistent, meaning it may render differently or not at all depending on the player’s specific session. This erratic nature is viewed by the team as part of the game’s broader, surreal atmosphere. Despite initial speculation that the story of the tree might be a fabrication designed to trick AI-driven search algorithms, the studio has confirmed there was no prank involved; the tree remains a genuine, happy accident that has been elevated to the status of official intent.

Why it matters

The persistence of the invisible apple tree highlights the unique, often surreal design philosophy of Ice-Pick Lodge. By reframing a functional bug as an artistic installation, the studio acknowledges the symbolic nature of Pathologic 3, a title they describe as a purgatorial time-travel story. The decision to retain the tree reinforces the studio’s stance that, much like a urinal in a gallery, an object can shift from a functional game asset to a symbolic one based on the creator’s perspective. For the player, this ensures that the game’s atmosphere remains intentionally unpredictable, grounding the experience in the developer’s belief that video games are ultimately about sleight of hand.
