Archetype Entertainment, a studio founded by former BioWare developers, has unveiled a deep dive into their upcoming project, *Exodus*. A new 40-minute gameplay showcase reveals a third-person sci-fi shooter that heavily leans into design language and mechanics familiar to fans of classic space RPGs. As reported by Kotaku, the footage highlights both the narrative structure and the combat systems currently in development.
Setting and Gameplay Mechanics
In *Exodus*, players step into the boots of Jun Aslan, a member of a ‘Traveller’ dynasty tasked with securing humanity’s future following Earth’s ecological collapse. The showcased mission involves liberating the Kay—a species of sentient frogs—from a hostile human faction. The universe is populated by a variety of alien species and ‘Awakened’ creatures, including an octopus-like companion seen operating a combat mech.
According to the gameplay footage, the UI and combat systems share significant DNA with past space-faring RPGs. Players manage a squad, utilizing a radial combat wheel to issue commands and switch weapons. Combat feedback follows a distinct color-coded system: red for health, yellow for armor, and blue for shields. The demo also featured a dialogue system that allows players to make choices impacting companion relationships and, in at least one instance, the long-term fate of an entire species.
Why it matters
For fans of character-driven sci-fi RPGs, *Exodus* appears to be positioning itself as a successor to the experiences defined by the developers’ previous work. The gameplay demonstrates a focus on companion dynamics and moral decision-making that directly affects mission outcomes and ship progression.
While the studio has shared this extensive look at the game, players should watch for further announcements regarding the final release window and platform availability as the team at Archetype Entertainment continues development.
