A dedicated modder is looking to shift the perspective of the upcoming World of Warcraft: Forever, aiming to turn the MMO into a fully immersive first-person experience. As reported by Eurogamer, the project—titled Retro Forever—is the brainchild of modder Arhkain, who seeks to bring the feel of classic fantasy RPGs like Morrowind and Hexen to Azeroth.

The Vision Behind Retro Forever

Arhkain began the project after finding a lack of existing options for viewing the game from a first-person perspective. The current build of the mod is a combination of existing addons, modified to create a bespoke experience. Rather than just locking the camera behind the eyes, the mod introduces custom animations for combat, flying, and crafting. For instance, players casting spells as a mage will see specific, custom character animations triggered by their abilities.

While the project currently relies on assets borrowed and adapted from titles like Morrowind and Hexen, Arhkain plans to pivot toward original asset creation to avoid potential legal issues. Notably, the developer has confirmed that no generative AI is being used in the process, stating that such tools would not assist in the mod’s specific development goals. An artist has already expressed interest in joining the effort to replace the placeholder assets.

Why it matters

For players looking to experience Azeroth in a completely new way, Retro Forever represents a significant shift in playstyle. Currently, the mod is not publicly available and remains a work in progress, with support currently limited to a specific selection of mage spells and class abilities. As the project expands, it could offer a novel alternative for those who enjoy the aesthetic and pace of classic, slower-moving first-person RPGs.

With World of Warcraft: Forever scheduled for release on Wednesday, 4th November, interest in community-made modifications is high. While players will have to wait for a public release of this specific mod, it stands as an example of the creative potential within the game’s community as it prepares for its official launch.
