Bloober Team, the developer behind the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake, is currently scaling its operations with seven horror titles in various stages of production. Speaking at Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show, CEO Piotr Babieno shared insights into the studio’s growth and its ambition to carve out a space alongside titans like Silent Hill and Resident Evil. As reported by IGN, the studio’s recent success—fueled by over 5 million copies of the Silent Hill 2 remake sold—has turned the company into a major player during a period of wider industry contraction.

The Psychology of Scares

Babieno attributes the current popularity of the horror genre to a volatile global climate. “I would say that horror is always at its strongest when something bad is happening to the world,” Babieno told IGN, noting that economic instability and global conflicts drive a collective sense of fear that translates well into entertainment. While he expressed unease about the state of the world, he maintains that this environment creates a demand for the visceral experiences his studio specializes in. Since shifting focus to horror in 2016, Bloober Team has prioritized iterative design and technological advancements over quick trend-chasing.

Future Projects and Studio Expansion

Despite early criticism during the development of Silent Hill 2, the studio has emerged with increased confidence and expanded capacity. Bloober now operates two first-party studios and coordinates with five Polish development teams through its ‘Broken Mirror Games’ label. Confirmed projects currently in the pipeline include a remake of the original Silent Hill, Layers of Fear 3, the Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive Onyx: The Dark Grip, and the psychological horror title Star Trek: Shadow Frontier. Babieno also hinted at ‘Project H,’ a new title from the team behind the upcoming Cronos: The New Dawn, describing it as a major evolutionary step for the studio’s design DNA.

Why it matters

For horror fans, this expansion suggests a steady stream of specialized titles that deviate from traditional survival horror formulas. Bloober Team is clearly positioning itself to challenge established genre icons, aiming to establish a third major horror intellectual property. Players can expect to see the studio’s next move shortly, with the Cronos: Lazarus story expansion arriving on December 3 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, featuring a faster, more aggressive combat style. Those looking for new entries in the genre should keep a close watch on the studio’s iterative development approach, as they look to define new milestones in the horror landscape.
