Nintendo has officially ruled out any further price increases for the Switch 2, even as the company faces a challenging financial period characterized by falling console sales and reduced operating profits. According to reporting from IGN, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed the company is not considering additional price adjustments, expressing confidence that they have sufficient memory supply to meet their annual sales target of 16.5 million units for the fiscal year ending in March 2027.
Financial Challenges and Market Context
Financial data reported via Bloomberg and CNBC paints a tough picture for the current quarter, with operating profits dipping 16% to 73.9 billion yen. Console sales also saw a notable decline, dropping 41% compared to the same period last year, with 2.67 million units sold between July and September 2026. This follows a previous price hike implemented in September, which was largely attributed to the industry-wide memory supply issues colloquially dubbed the ‘RAMpocalypse.’
Despite the dip, the console remains ahead of the original Switch’s pace in terms of lifetime sales, currently sitting at 26.35 million units. Nintendo’s leadership emphasizes that the current drop is partly due to the high bar set by the console’s record-breaking launch last year, which enjoyed significant stock availability.
The Search for Software Momentum
Investors remain cautious, citing concerns over a lack of high-profile software releases throughout this year. As noted by Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, in an interview with CNBC, the company faces pressure to deliver more blockbuster titles to maintain hardware momentum, noting that current releases have not fully satisfied market expectations.
However, Nintendo is looking toward the holiday season and beyond to stabilize interest. The recently launched Ocarina of Time remake is expected to boost console engagement, while the 2027 pipeline looks more robust with confirmed titles such as Pokémon Winds & Pokémon Waves. Furthermore, shareholders reacted positively to the latest updates, with Nintendo shares rising 8.13% following the report.
Why it matters
For the average gamer, the most important takeaway is that the cost of entry for the Switch 2 is staying put for the time being. If you have been hesitant about picking up the console due to recent price volatility, the confirmation that no further hikes are planned provides some stability in an otherwise fluctuating market.
However, the pressure is now on Nintendo to deliver high-quality exclusive games to justify the current price point. With analysts highlighting a lack of blockbuster software as a point of concern, players should watch for how upcoming titles perform in the coming year. If the library expands as hoped in 2027, it could provide the value proposition needed to keep the console’s momentum strong despite current economic headwinds.
