Sony has officially confirmed a new high for its gaming ecosystem, reporting that Monthly Active Users (MAU) across PlayStation 4 and 5 reached 127 million in September 2026. According to financial results reported by Eurogamer, this figure marks a seven percent year-on-year increase for the company. Alongside the rise in the user base, active play time also saw growth, increasing by four percent compared to the same period last year. This surge in engagement has bolstered Sony’s bottom line, with the Game & Network Services division recording a nine percent revenue increase and an 83 percent rise in operating profit.

The impact of major titles

Driving much of this success is the performance of recent high-profile releases. Sony specifically highlighted *Marvel’s Wolverine* as a key contributor to the positive quarterly results, reporting that the title sold through 2.4 million copies in roughly 50 days as of November 4, 2026. Additionally, *Ghost of Yotei* has continued to perform well since its October 2025 launch, reaching 3.3 million units sold.

While the software and user engagement metrics are on the rise, Sony is seeing a expected cooling in hardware demand. The company sold 2.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles during the period, down from 4 million in the same quarter of 2025. Sony CFO Lin Tao characterized this decline as a “natural cycle of console launches and iteration.” Looking ahead, Tao confirmed that development of the next-generation platform—the PlayStation 6—is “progressing as scheduled,” with the company planning to make “solid progress” on the machine throughout 2027.

Why it matters

For players, these numbers suggest that despite controversies surrounding Sony’s long-term move to phase out physical discs by 2028, the core PlayStation ecosystem remains highly active and profitable. While the dip in PS5 hardware sales might concern some investors, the shift in focus toward turning the existing 127 million active accounts into more frequent software customers is the new priority for the company.

Players should keep an eye on how Sony manages the transition toward its next-generation hardware in 2027. With hardware sales slowing, the pressure will be on Sony to maintain software engagement through its blockbuster titles, as the company prepares for the eventual launch of the PlayStation 6.
