World of Warcraft Forever has officially arrived, marking a massive launch that has left many fans wondering why it took so long to materialize. According to a report from IGN, Blizzard has finally shed light on the development history of this Classic+ game mode and the specific catalyst that made it a reality.
The Path to Classic+
Blizzard senior game designer Josh Greenfield explained to Bloomberg that the concept of “WoW Forever” had been circulating internally even before the original 2019 Classic release. Initially, the team chose to prioritize a faithful, straight-up port of vanilla World of Warcraft. However, as that version aged, the development team began experimenting with more radical ideas.
The real turning point arrived with the 2023 launch of Season of Discovery, which introduced major gameplay shifts such as ability gems and the conversion of 5-player dungeons into full-scale raids. Greenfield credited the community’s enthusiastic response to these changes as the primary spark for the Forever project. He noted, “That’s really when the conversation started around, ‘Hey, what does a permanent version of this game look like?’”
This success gave Blizzard’s leadership the confidence to greenlight the project. The development gained momentum once the team began integrating a new graphics engine, starting with a successful tech demo set in Northshire Abbey that reportedly won over the internal team.
Why it matters
For players, this release represents a shift toward a more permanent, evolving experience rooted in the classic era. The successful, stable launch—supported by approximately 200TB of memory dedicated to server hardware—suggests that Blizzard is heavily invested in the long-term viability of the mode.
As noted in IGN’s early review, the experience captures a nostalgic feeling while offering enough new surprises to keep players engaged. With the game now live, players can look forward to seeing how Blizzard maintains this momentum as they progress through the leveling experience, with further assessments expected in the coming weeks.
A Proven Formula
It is clear that the iterative process seen in previous projects influenced this move. The success of Season of Discovery paved the way for other experimental modes like Mists of Pandaria Remix and Legion Remix. By building on these successes, Blizzard has finally delivered the version of the classic experience that the team had been kicking around for years.
